Ford 4AOD on a '98 Ranger XLT:no more made after...?
When our '98 Ranger XLT truck had to have its tranny(a 4-speed auto OD) replaced, the dealer had to special-order the major parts, since we were told that Ford no longer made this tranny for Rangers/Mazda B-Series...
To the Ford service/parts guy, it's time to call on you again...
When did Ford stop making the 4AOD(and switch to the 5AOD) for Rangers?

There are 3 different transmissions used in the Ranger/B-series Mazda: 4R44E (4 speed OD), 4R55E (4 speed OD), and 5R55E (5 speed OD).
The 4R44E was used in '95-'01 Rangers/B-Series with a 4 cylinder or 3.0L engine.
The 4R55E was used in '95-'01 Rangers/B-Series with a 4.0L engine. This was a slightly beefed up version of the 4R44E for the bigger engine.
The 5R55E was used in '95-'01 Ranger/B-Series with a 4.0L engine. This transmission is identical to the 4R44E, except that it had 5 gears instead of 4.
So basically if you got a 4.0L Ranger/B-Series, you would get the 4 speed OD, or you could upgrade to the 5 speed OD option.
2002-present Ranger/B-Series all use 5 speed OD transmissions (not the 5R55E), the 4 speed OD is no longer available.
