Difference between gear lock and steering wheel lock?
I have just moved to Delhi. I have been my told by numerous people living in different colonies on how cars have vanished from parking lots - sometimes even during daylight. I am trying to assess whether I should buy a gear lock or a steering wheel lock but cannot figure out the difference between the 2 and which is better? Also what are the good models for either in India. Based on a few visits to car accessories shops I have been told there is a gear lock brand called 'Auto Cop'.
Gear locks attach to the gear lever preventing gear changing. steering locks prevent you turning the wheel even if you break the factory fitted steering lock.
I personally hate both varieties as they are both unsightly and irritating having to apply it to the car every time you park anywhere.In my opinion a proper aftermarket immobiliser is a much better alternative.
If I had to choose between the two, id go for a steering lock, as i have found people with gearlocks have either damaged gear levers and hand brakes where the lock rubs. or they have the type where a bracket is fitted permanently to the car, which is both unsightly and constantly irritating.
At least with a steering lock you can get numerous varieties that wrap all round the wheel so no permanent damage is caused to your car.
